Suspension design was typical Mustang but with heavier springs and the rear shock absorbers ‘staggered’ to minimise body movement. A hefty rear roll-bar from the 7.0-litre Boss 429 was optional. During 1969, Boss 302 production totalled just 1628 cars. 1970 was a better year for the 302-engined cars, with more than 7000 sold.

Going into the 1969 season Mark Donohue’s #6 Sunoco Blue Camaro would be the car to beat. Ford’s answer to the Z/28 was the new ’69 Boss 302, and Ford financed two teams for 1969–Carroll Shelby’s with drivers Peter Revson, Horst Kwech, Sam Posey, and Dan Gurney and Bud Moore’s with drivers Parnelli Jones and George Follmer.
Fortunately, when it came time to create the 1969 Boss 302 Mustang, Ford had employed just the right people at just the right time. Early in 1968, self-confessed racing nut Semon “Bunkie” Knudsen, who had been driving GM’s back door racing activities, accepted Henry Ford II’s offer to become president of Ford Motor Company.
